About Us

Eight Bells was forged in 2010 in Portland, Oregon by Melynda Jackson as an experimental metal songwriting project that bloomed from the ashes of her previous act, Subarachnoid Space. Though band members have shifted, Eight Bells’ unique fusion of progressive rock, doom, and black metal combined with powerful ambient atmospheres has only continued to evolve. Jackson, known as an off center and innovative guitarist remains the only constant.

Eight Bells’ first two records, 2013’s The Captains Daughter and the much evolved 2016 followup Landless conjure up emotive and often bleakly atmospheric soundscapes; they take a thematic approach that results in powerful and deeply evocative music.

Having regrouped after the 2016 tour with Voivod in support of Landless, The Current lineup is focused on new material that they debuted at a rare live appearance at Psycho Las Vegas in August of 2018. Eight Bells break from the pack with this new material further exploring the natural tones and grand visions of the 1970s adding contemporary metal, haunting female vocals and a 19th-century ghostliness, resulting in music that transcends genre and time entirely.

EIGHT BELLS released their sophomore full-length, Landless, via Battleground Records in 2016. Captured by producer/engineer Billy Anderson (Agalloch, Tragedy, Demon Lung, Ommadon, Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth et al), the record is a defining evolution within EIGHT BELLS’ perpetually shapeshifting sound explorations. They toured in early 2016 with Voivod and Vektor in support of Landless.  Pitchfork calls the record, “Heartbreakingly beautiful,” further lauding the offering’s, “wraithlike vocals and numbed melodies hanging over pinprick prog fretwork… Dual vocal lines emanate from some unseen place, sometimes braided together in a conjoined plea for connection…” Noisey concurs crowning Landless, “a tour-de-force,” and hailing their,“out-there progression, ethereal atmosphere, and unexpected harmonies.” Elsewhere the sentiment echoes.
